Before leaving the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, my driver took me far out into the countryside to explore a nearby national wildlife sanctuary and visit some of the smaller towns on the frozen steppe. It was −45 that day when I stepped outside, and as we drove out of the city, I couldn’t believe the sight of white space that never seemed to end.
This was a small village, located near the slightly larger settlement of Baganuur, a few hours east of the city. I saw no people, and judging by the lack of yurts and colorful rooftops, I assumed it was a newer settlement—perhaps housing for the ever-growing mine nearby.
